Personal Computer (PC)

Personal Computer (PC)

It is the invention that effectively changed the world, transforming society from an industrial one to an informational one.

The first PC was Sphere1 and was created in 1975 by Michael D. Wise at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

On August 12, 1981, the American concern International Business Machines (IBM) introduced on the market a personal computer, which would revolutionize everything. Until that time, computers were found only in universities, research institutes or big concerns. They were very large, they took up a lot of space, they required whole teams of technicians, and they cost millions of dollars.

After the appearance of IBM's first personal computer model, many companies tried to enter this business. Thus, alternatives to the IBM model appeared, such as the Apple II, Commodore or Atari, which were already, even then, easier to use than the variant designed by IBM, which was not only extremely inconvenient to use but also very expensive. An IBM computer with a monitor and printer ended up costing 35,000 deutsche marks in Europe back then, a price unimaginable today.

At the launch time, no one imagined that just a quarter of a century later, that computer would have an international market with over 880 million installed systems.

Contrary to expectations, those who have contributed the most to the progress of computers over the years, have always been teenagers - because they always wanted more memory and higher processing speed for their games -and these requirements never being met by the IBM’s model.

IBM entrusted the invention of operating systems to a young man named Bill Gates, who would later lay the foundations of the Microsoft empire.

Currently there are already eight types of computers: personal computer, mainframe, supercomputer, workstation, Apple Macintosh, laptop, tablet and smartphone.
